2016 ESTATE ROSE
These days we pride ourselves on making wines of every color: from pale white Sauvignon Blanc, light salmon Para Maria Rose, golden Roussanne, deep pink Estate Rose, pale reds of Carbonic Sangiovese and Combe Trousseau, medium red-hued Grenache, and of course, the specialty of the house - deep, dark Syrah.
Our Rose journey started over 10 years ago with Nebbiolo and evolved into Sangiovese and Grenache blends. After falling in love with Carbonic Sangiovese in 2013, we dedicated all of our early-picked Sangiovese to that program, leaving Rose to become 100% Grenache in 2014. While we loved the 2014 Grenache rose, the color was extremely pale. We decided to add a portion of more deeply colored Carbonicly fermented Grenache in 2015. After being blown away by the 2015, we again employed this technique in 2016.
Healthy yields, and a decision to use some of block 3 entirely for Rose, led to an increase in Rose production from 780 cases to 1950 cases. The cold nights of 2016 kept the Grenache extremely fresh and high in acid, allowing La Cuadrilla the luxury of picking Rose fruit for over two weeks. By getting a nice continuum of phenolic ripeness and sweetness, the 2016 Rose manages to walk the tight rope between crispness and roundness.
AT THE WINERY
Two thirds immediate-press peach-hued Vin Gris blended with one third light red whole-grape fermented Grenache. Both portions were picked early for low alcohol and freshness.
Pure fresh strawberry and watermelon give way to a touch of stone and earth. Sweet tart candy with an alluring freshness. In the mouth, a touch of saline and flint add a savory edge to the soft, voluptuous texture.
