2013 HPR SYRAH
Hecho Por Ruben = Made By Ruben
Vineyard Manager Ruben Solorzano started making wine in order to eliminate variables. By taking control of the winemaking process, using the exact same fermentation process and aging process for his different vineyard micro-blocks – he could compare the effects of different pruning and training techniques, as well as judge what picking decisions he preferred. Since his first vintage in 2008, the lots usually have been blended together, but not before Ruben tastes and compares each barrel, making mental notes on vineyard best-practices.
While the 2013 Stolpman Syrahs possessed a ton of high-toned energy, the slightly warmer Harrison Clarke site possesses a bit more yummy approachability.
AT THE WINERY
We made the 2013 Hecho Por Ruben Harrison Clarke Vineyard syrah in our classic Stolpman winemaking fashion. We left 33% of each lot whole-cluster and allowed for native fermentation, draining the tanks into neutral barrels. The goal of this wine is to let Ruben’s farming shine through.
A perfectly aged stunner: Cocoa, Cherry bark, and toasted almond, with cassis and currants on the nose. Deep purple and plummy on the front pallet, but still light, vibrant and uplifting. Back pallet has much more spice and lingers for quite a while: White pepper, sage and bay. Rich mouthfeel, balanced by the freshness of the fruits and mild tannin
