2017 COMBE CHENIN BLANC

BACKGROUND

Rajat Parr and Pete Stolpman’s esoteric collaboration is labeled “Combe” referring to the French word for a small sheltered valley within a vineyard. Sometime around 2010, Rajat Parr became convinced of the great potential for the pale red Trousseau grape on the Limestone soils of Stolpman Vineyards.  We decided to partner with him to make a light red Trousseau and a Trousseau Pet’Nat.  The first vintage was 2014, and we now have 2.3 acres of Trousseau planted.  Next, Rajat lobbied to plant Chenin Blanc, and the 1.5 acres we grafted gave us our first wine in 2016.  In 2018 a 1/2 acre block of Gamay came online, most likely to be blended with Trousseau.   More confident than ever in Rajat’s vision, we planted Poulsard, Savignin and Mondeuse in experimental trial quantities in 2017.

VINTAGE

After a healthy, moderate 2017 vintage - heat spiked on Labor day weekend.  We picked all of the yellow-colored grapes on September 1, before the heat.  Color change (from green to yellow) accelerated over the warm weekend and we returned promptly September 5 and then for a last pick on September 7th.   The goal of our Chenin Blanc is a trifecta of 1. Richness – why we only pick the yellowed grapes, 2. High acid – why we jump early and pick as soon as some color changes, rather than waiting for the entire crop to color up.  and 3. Ageworthy Nuance - achieved through careful farming and winemaking (concentrated fruit in vineyard, preserve reduction and freshness in winery)

AT THE WINERY

A combination of free-run and gently pressed juice flowed directly into neutral barrels to natively ferment and age.  Rajat, a proponent of Reduction, mandated only one racking over the 9 months in barrel to minimize oxygen exposure.

SENSORY

Torched lemon rind and flinty minerality on nose and front palate.  Fresh and vibrant, super crunchy mouthfeel – RP

Great tension, salty, mineral driven, electric acidity for days, lovely waxy length on the finish. – KK
