What a wild wide rose has been! In 2009 we only made a couple hundred cases of rose. Now we make well over a thousand cases each of Estate Rose and Para Maria Rose! For a few years in between, our Estate Rose was a combination of Sangiovese and Grenache. We fell in love with the deeper profile of Carbonic Sangiovese and we found we preferred the purity of a 100% Grenache rose – so the two wines were separated. In pursuit of added texture, we continued with a carbonic Grenache portion in our Estate Rose through last year.
This year, in pursuit of further purity and a more nuanced flavors, we direct-pressed the majority of the wine and gently extracted skin color from 20% of the fruit. To signal the latest stylistic change away from the darker, more intense profile, the 2018 Estate Rose of Grenache comes in a slope shouldered “burgundy” bottle, rather than the taller “Bordeaux” bottle of years past.
Heat spikes define vintages in Santa Barbara County. We are blessed to farm without fear of rain, rot, hail, and humidity. In 2018 the only heat wave we suffered through arrived so early, on July 7; that it didn’t impact the fruit ripening or quality. The summer turned into a moderate, steady, dream year when acids hung high as sugar slowly accumulated and intense, nuanced flavor developed.
The salmon pink glow offers a first indication of the delicate flower that is 2018 Estate Rose of Grenache. Dancing with fleshy curves across the palate, the fruit becomes firm through the crisp finish. Bright red cherry juice sings from the nose through the palate, riding on a feathery layer above the popping acidity. A perfect combination of depth and brightness.
